DAY 29 - Whale, we picked up a new passenger today!

So we did have plans to cross into Alaska today, but then we realized that meant another 6 hours of driving, emptying our cooler, and alot of other hassle. We also realized that we are heading out of The Yukon to BC on Sunday and that means a lot more driving and living out of the truck. So instead we decided to take advantage of this day to restock and reorganize for the trip ahead. We got up and headed into town right away. First on the stop was an oil change, seeing as how we were already over the milage and the next actual stop wasn't until we hit Whistler - which is about 4 days and 2230km away. Unfortunately Whitehorse doesn't have a Ford dealership, so we headed to the next best thing and were in and out in within a half an hour. Zack even got to nerd out with the mechanic about some of their favourite shows, so I'm sure it made it go quicker for the both of them lol
Next we headed to Canadian Tire to pick up a couple essentials needed. First on the list was windshield washer fluid, which should have been filled at the oil change but they happened to be out ... convenient. Next on the list was a foot pump for our air mattress. Our double Queen air mattress (like sleeping on a cloud) has been amazing and gotten us through so much already. Before our trip, it never lost any air and we never had to re-pump it up. Of course, within about a week of our trip that changed and there is a very slow leak. Which is clearly getting a little bigger each time, so we keep crossing our fingers that she holds out. Considering we haven't yet woke up on the ground (Knock on wood) and still get a great sleep, we didn't think it was worth it to by a whole new one just yet. It has however been a little annoying having to lay on the ground of the tent to put those 30 breaths in to top it off each night. So we got a foot pump which has solved all our problems!
Once we were done at Canadian Tire we hungout in the truck for a little bit on the wifi. Our trip is quickly coming down to the last stretch (😭) and we want to make sure we make the most of the days we have left. So we spent some time planning out exactly how to do that. Eventually we decided it was time to reorganize the truck for the 47589537359 time. We went through the cooler, organized the food box, and put all the extra things back into the bed of the truck that won't be needed. We realized too at this point that groceries were a must, we had to stock up before heading on the road again. We stopped in at Walmart which didn't have a produce section, crap. We grabbed everything else we needed, including some just for men beard dye that I am going to try out to tint my eyebrows myself! Zack thinks I'm absolutely crazy, but I think it's genius. I've watched my YouTube tutorials and my sister has done it a million times, so what could go wrong? Stay posted on the results bahaha
Anyways, next we went to Save-on-Foods, the grocery store here. We haven't been to this brand of grocery store yet, and as soon as we walked in we regretted that we hadn't gone there the whole trip. It had everything you could think of, for actually reasonable prices and really good quality. There was a full homemade section, an entire array of hot foods, pre-preared foods and even a soft serve frozen yogurt section. Zack was most thrilled by the freshly squeezed orange juice which immediately caught his eye. Anyone who knows Zack knows he's a juice guy. Everytime we go grocery shopping we have to go through the cart before checkout to count the juices and eliminate a bunch hahaha So needless to say he went straight for the big jug, but after realizing it was $12 he settled for the small $4 one instead. We headed to the checkout with our basket of produce, and that's when we saw him... a giant wicker whale basket sitting on top of a shelf right above our checkout. I laughed and pointed out how much I wanted him, thinking it was just a display considering it was near the floral section. Then we saw the sign, 50% off from $98. Oh noooooo, it was for sale and HALF OFF. This is where the dilemma came in, because we have NO room in truck, and I mean it is a giant whale basket. But I do really love whales and it would look amazing in our house. So while Zack checked out each item, I greatly debated. Then, a cashier walked by and Zack instantly flagged her over, pointed to it and said "WE'LL TAKE THE WHALE!" Now for any Office fans, picture the episode when they "Pretty Woman" Dwight and go to the Steamtown mall and as he's walking away, he turns suddenly and says "I'LL TAKE THE WIZARD!" it was exactly that moment. Except instead of the cashier saying great I'll pack that up for you, she stared in disbelief laughing and said, "oh you want to buy that whale? Are you sure?" And we both histarically shook our heads yes and grabbed it off the shelf. Now the best part of all of this was that we were at a self check out. So we then had to find the tag on this 2ft whale, scan it and place it on the scale. Everyone around us was laughing, it was great. When you see a giant whicker whale in The Yukon, you gotta buy it right?
We then packed up the cooler, added new ice and found the best spot in the back for Moby, which Zack has so originally named him.
After that we fueled up the tank, grabbed some Pho for our last meal out in The Yukon and headed back to camp. Zack started up an incredible fire while I did some meal prep for the days ahead. We got a couple frozen pizzas that we wanted to cook up and store in the cooler. Zack had just showed me a video this morning of a guy dropping a pizza face down while trying to take it out of the oven, so as he was putting it on the fire to cook I jokingly said "don't drop it in the fire like that guy😂" and what d'you know, not 5 minutes later the pizza is face down in the fire, toppings everywhere haha It was a really sad moment, and I feel partially responsible for jinxing it! Thankfully though we bought 2 so he cooked up the second one to perfection with no problem at all.
As we were making food, the Park Warden came by to let us know that there were 3 bears frequenting the area, a momma black bear and her cubs. Soooo after talking ourselves out of the thought that there was a bear outside our tent last night, we the realized it was actually very likely that there was a bear outside our tent last night. We made sure to clean up extra good, roasted a couple marshmallows and called 'er quits for the night. Tomorrow is our last day in The Yukon and it's sure going to be a good one 😉 We are heading to Kluane National Park and Reserve for a very exciting adventure.
