DAY 23 - Whitehorse, YT
Sorry for the delay in yesterday's post, we got to our Airbnb and were too preoccupied by the wifi and a solid nights sleep lol
Friday night we again slept in the truck, and it seems that the more we do so the better we are getting at it! Each time we find a way to make it a little comfier and get a little bit better sleep. So we're super happy about that considering we still have plenty of nights to sleep in the truck.
We woke up to the sun shining in the back window, and knew it was going to be a really good day. We thankfully only had about a 5 hour drive today to reach Whitehorse. Since Zack has driven basically the whole trip so far, we switched it up for our drive to The Yukon and it's been nice. Although by the end of it, I was ready to hop back into the passenger seat, and by looking at Zack he was looking forward to driving again! 😂You really don't realize what a luxury it is to have someone primarily driving you around lol
The more we drove into The Yukon, the more I was enthralled by it. I had no idea it was going to be so beautiful, with the lush, dense forests! I've never seen so many trees in my life, and all healthy trees for that matter. Each time we went over a hill through the mountains you could see the infinite treetops continue without a space inbetween. The roadside was scattered with those golden trees and wildflowers of all sorts of shades of pinks, purples and oranges. Along the way, there were also numerous names and messages spelt out in rocks anywhere there was a sandy patch to do so. One of the best parts of this trip for me is seeing these little traditions in each place that created a trend for travellers all over the world, and is a staple to the community.
The landscape continued to amaze us the entire drive, but unfortunately we didn't have much luck while on the lookout for wildlife. We did see 1 huge eagle while coming into Whitehorse but that was it for the day! Although I did learn alot about the wildlife in The Yukon as Zack made use of the million pamphlets we got from the visitors centre and read them along the way 😂 He told me all about the mushrooms, plants, bats, bears and ungulates (hooved mammals) that we may see here. Something really cool that we also got from the Visitors Centre is a Yukon Gold Explorer's Passport. They have a contest and activity for visitors that consists of getting as many stamps as you can from different historical and cultural places around the Yukon. If you get 10 stamps you get a sweet Yukon pin, and entered into a draw for 1 ounce of Klondike Gold. Needless to say, that has now became the goal of our trip ... Zack REALLY wants that pin! Oh and I guess that gold would be nice too.
We got out first stamp in Watson Lake where we started, so that made our next stop in Teslin for 2 stamps. We first went to the Geroge Johnston Museum, where Zack paid $10 for us to "explore" and get our stamp, before being told we didn't need to actually go into the museum to get the stamp lmfao So then we felt guilty and had to spend sometime there. It was pretty interesting though to learn about the trapping history of the town, and we even got to experience a "gopher robe" made from 126 ground squirrels bahaha. Zack also decided he would try on a coyote hide around his neck and shoulders, which he instantly regretted when his entire neck became fire red and itchy!!! 😂
Next stop was the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre. Here we just grabbed our stamp and had an awesome chat with the lady at the front (who was George Johnston's great niece). After that we hammered down towards Whitehorse. We arrived into town around 2pm and headed for our Airbnb. After driving just outside of the downtown area, we started driving through a community of trailerparks. After seeing some really rundown areas, we started to get a littttttle worried about where we were staying for the next two nights. We made our right turn, down to the end of the street, and thankfully pulled into a community of nice, small condo townhouses. Instant relief off our shoulders. We packed up what we needed and headed inside where we met the husband and son and got situated in our room. We were looking so forward to a nap, a real shower and finally some wifi to feel a little more at home!!
We wasted away the afternoon doing exactly the above. The best part of it all was that they had a smart TV and I even got to binge watch the Office again, after having serious withdrawal haha. We called it an early night to catch up on some rest and to get ready before truly exploring Whitehorse tomorrow!
