DAY 20 - A day around Jasper!
This morning we had a well deserved sleep in (until 9am lol) and enjoyed our rest. Even after waking up we just layed in our cozy sleep bag fortress and reminisced about our insane day yesterday and trip so far.
At the campground we are currently at, we had some pretty interesting neighbours to our right. There was about 6 of them, all stuffed into 2 two-person tents, and all speaking different languages. The other day a couple of them decided to cut directly through the middle of our campsite to go get some water, as we were standing about 5 feet away. Now the craziest part is that it wasn't even a short cut for them because it was probably even a shorter distance if they took the road...and they continued to do it on the way back as well. Zack and I just stood there dumbfounded. Not really standard camping etiquette. So Zack and I very obviously set up our wood pile, table, and chairs as a wall along the barrier of our campsites to try to send the message that we didn't really appreciate that. Then what do you know, this morning as we are waking up one of them walks right beside our tent banging their pots and pans! We couldn't help but die laughing, and hope they were gone by the time we got up.
Anyways, today we had planned to stock up the gas tank and cooler and to see some more of the town of Jasper before heading out tomorrow. We took off to the TGA? which is I believe the only grocery store and everything is local. Surprisingly not quite as expensive as you would think either. After that we did a good reorganization of the truck again, put away our hiking gear in the back and got all ready for a couple days of driving.
Jasper was very smokey today and there was air quality warnings across the province as the BC smoke rolled in. Zack and I were both feeling great after our hike yesterday, our legs were just a little sore, but our throats and lungs were on fire. We decided to just take it easy, and both agreed that Jasper has been extremely good to us so far!
We headed through the streets to explore some of the shops, and noticed a small local pub called The Whistle Stop Pub. Now the reason we noticed it was because of their sign out front advertising their super cheap pints, and Guiness on tap. We headed in and immediately knew it was our kind of pub based on the atmosphere. We filled our bellies with some food and beer and headed out very satisfied! We've ended up stopping at a couple of restaurants in Jasper, and haven't regretted it once. The food here has definitely added to our experience. But we are definitely looking forward to cooking up some more of our own meals again over the next little bit, and very happy we are doing so much activity to work it off 😂
After lunch we hit up a couple touristy shops, grabbed our Jasper ornament (we're getting one from every place we go) and headed to Jasper Brewing Co. We have also made a trend in trying to hit a brewery in every place we stop and so far it has been a great success! Zack has gotten a t-shirt at every one, and has now started a pretty sweet collection so far. After thoroughly enjoying a Key Lime Citrus Ale and a Blueberry Vanilla Ale and some fantastic chats with the 2 bartenders, we decided to hit the road back to the campground. We were going to stop by to see a couple more lakes, but both decided we were satisfied by what we have experienced in Jasper already, and ready to gear up for tomorrow.
When we got back to the campground we decided it was time for a little nap. This is what vacations are about aren't they? hahaha Although, it was about 30 degrees in our tent at this point and so it was extremely hard to fall asleep. After a tiny little catnap, we woke up feeling pretty refreshed. Maybe a little too refreshed for Zack, as he quickly became his crazy, goofy self... After some uncontrollable giggles, it took me about 15 minutes to try to get him to stop singing Queens Bohemian Rhapsody on the top of his lungs and get out of the tent!!!
Once I finally broke him down, Zack started up the campfire with his sweet ferrocerium rod and it was roaring in no time! We cooked up some burgers to have on the road, and Zack made up some incredible ham and pineapple sandwiches that he cooked over the fire to perfection!!! They were really good, would highly recommend them to everyone (Pinterest of course 😉)
Now we sit here, Zack again serenading me with guitar as the fire dies down and we listen to the cool breeze off the river flow through the trees. Off to bed soon to get up and head on day 1 of our trek to The Yukon!
