DAY 16 - A real day of camping

After a surprisingly good sleep in the truck, we woke up and headed back towards Kerkeslin Campground with high hopes around 7am. We drove in to make our rounds, and right away spotted a couple packing up their tent, YES! We slowly pulled up, asked them if they were heading out and they reassured us the site was ours in about 15 minutes. We drove the rest of the campground to see if there were any more options but it seems these were the only eagar beavers on this fine Saturday morning 😂
When they were finished, we grabbed our permit to put in the post and started setting up. We both could barely see straight and had uncontrollably giggles trying to get this tent set up and Airmatress blown up. It appears the 2 weeks straight of activities was catching up to us, and we knew we needed a day of rest. It was also an extremely smokey and cold day, so we weren't too inclined to do anything else. Once our comfy little tent was all ready, we crawled right in to gladly sleep the day away!
At 12pm we finally woke up, rested and feeling great! We hopped into the truck to make a trip into town for some gas and ice, then headed right back to the campground. The absolutely best part about Jasper so far, is the CAMPFIRES!!! Since we've started our trip, we haven't been able to have a single campfire. Not even in Killarney! So when we found out that there wasn't a fire ban in Jasper, we were beyond excited. The cool thing too, is out here you pay for a fire permit ($8.80 a day) which included an unlimited supply of wood! So needless to say, as soon as we got back Zack started up the fire and it didn't stop all night.
We also (for pretty much the first time on our trip) enjoyed a couple cold beers while we sat around the fire. Zack sereneded me with his guitar for a little while, we reminisced on our engagement and even talked about some potential wedding plans!!! 😄
Before dinner we enjoyed a veryyyyyy long game of scrabble. Sorry, I enjoyed the game of scrabble, Zack did not. Every round he got a handful of letters that gave him little to no options, and so of course I also won. But we did finish off the entire bag of letters down to only a Q and an R left, which I don't think I've ever done in my life!!!
Dinner was the best part of our day, because we finally got to cook on the fire! Just a simple grilled cheese was on the menu for tonight, as we had been snacking on veggies and hummus all day lol
After dinner was done and we were all cleaned up, we sat and enjoyed the cool night by the fire with the rushing Athabasca river behind us. Then off to bed we went to get MORE sleep and prepare for exploring Jasper over the next couple days!
